I’m finally done with this book. Boy oh boy, it took me forever with this one! I don’t usually spend more than months reading a particular book, i move on to another if it gets too boring. Don’t get me wrong though, there’s nothing lame about this book, more often than not i found myself hallucinating as i go through page by page. I allow my imaginations to work its magic, which is why it took me centuries to proceed to subsequent chapters.
I’ll give you a short review on this one. Like every other fantasy book, you tend to use your brain too much as you translate alphabets into pictures and scenes, and in my case, as 3D as possible. During my read, i envision “Pi Patell”, the boy in this novel, lost in the great Pacific ocean as he drift aimlessly with a bunch of zoo animals only to witness their brutal death, one by one. A self proclaimed vegetarian found himself butchering sea animals in order to survive and to feed a 420 pound Bengal tiger on board so that the boy himself does not become lunch.
At one point, he was suffering from extreme starvation that he started eating everything available, regardless of their edibility that ranges from birds to reptiles, to fish, dolphins, animal corpse and the worst of the bunch, tiger faeces. The best part is, the book is written in such a vivid manner that you’ll suffer the sufferings of Pi, celebrate inconceivable joy as he discovered land after 7 months of being castaway, smell tiger poop when you see something rounded and brown (and trust me, you don’t want to put any of those into your mouth), and not to mention experience a little neurosis as one approaches the end of the story.
Is the book good? Well yes, i’d definitely recommend it to those who loves good fiction. If you have time, this is more than just companionship, it gives you one hell of an adventure.
